Healthy Habits for the Parent

"Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it."

--Plato

We are very good about encouraging our children to get outdoors and play, get some exercise, but what about ourselves? Do we often take our own advice?

Just as it is very important for your child to get regular exercise it is also important for you to practice what you preach.

Research shows that the benefits of physical activity include:

an increase in self confidence
increase in energy
less stress and anxiety
improved sleeping patterns
enhanced immunity
lower risk of heart disease
lower risk of certain types of cancer
lower risk of diabetes
lower risk of high blood pressure
stronger bones
better quality of life
increased chance of independence in life's later years

All it takes is 30 minutes 3 to 5 days a week. Make exercise fun, not a chore. Take a walk, a bike ride or just play around in the yard with your child. You can get the benefit of better health and the enjoyment of making memories with your child. Memories that both you and your child will cherish.

Being fit is more than being free of disease; it is feeling full of vitality and enthusiasm for life. It is not only a gift you can give yourself but a gift you can give to your children.
